About

I studied at Edinburgh University and Edinburgh College of Art graduating in 1989 winning The Macallan Scottish Art Prize.

I started teaching Art & Design in 1990 and continued to make Art and exhibit. With my sons arriving in the late 90s and teaching full time until recently my art production slowed, with exhibitions becoming less, though I continued to participate in group shows and sell work.

Part-time teaching allowed more time for my art then retiring fully in 2024 opened doors for gallery visits, travel for inspiration to move and expand my artwork again.

My work is an expressive take on the Scottish landscape where mark and gesture explore emotions connected to place. Colour, gestural mark-making and surface allow the viewer to connect, bringing their own experience to the work. Expressive energy taps into memory and experience of wild places; wilderness and land, elemental forces of nature then human marks on land and sea.

It is about the landscape and place, but also about rough on smooth, marks thick and thin, balance. Colour against colour. Shape, pattern – the visual elements in flow. Winter cold or hot, seasonal impact, exploration, an end a beginning; night and day – elemental – time captured. Wilderness or our altered land………. it is expression of land and sea, being there, feeling it, knowing good and bad for earth; mother earth. Joy, peace and sadness or anger or just paint and mark……………….my work is like a diary for me ….. memories ……………spontaneous and contemplative…. the essence…..sanctuary and home…..
